Admissions, student finance and visas

A practical roadmap for UK and international students applying in Scotland.

Seven steps before you apply

  1. Choose the exact institution and course. Start with official provider pages and search a precise entry year, campus, mode and award.
  2. Check the admissions route. Many undergraduate applicants use UCAS; postgraduate, further education and some specialist applications can be direct.
  3. Check academic, language and professional criteria. Confirm grades, English evidence, portfolios, assessments or interviews required for your intended programme.
  4. Investigate costs and funding. Verify current published tuition fees and living costs. Confirm your fee status, bursary rules and whether your nationality/residence affects eligibility.
  5. Prepare required documentation. Check the provider’s requirements for transcripts, references, personal statement or other evidence. Translation and certification rules vary.
  6. Confirm visa rules if applicable. Only rely on GOV.UK and licensed sponsors for Student visa rules and documents; an offer is not itself a visa.
  7. Arrange housing, travel and arrival. Check arrival dates, accommodation contracts, health arrangements and any required registration before travel.

Student finance in Scotland

SAAS student support depends on eligibility and residence. Tuition rules differ for Scottish, rest-of-UK and international applicants, so confirm your fee status directly.

Information for international students

Review the relevant Student visa route, sponsor licence, maintenance evidence, TB testing rules where applicable, ATAS requirements for some courses, and arrival conditions directly on GOV.UK. Never rely on a summary as a substitute for immigration guidance.
